Forest Orienteering
In cooperation with Orienteering Alberta and the Foothills Wanderers Orienteering Club, we offer real forest orienteering* experiences in any of the following locations in and around Calgary:
Bragg Creek
- Elbow Bluffs
- Sulphur Springs
- Kamp Kiwanis
- Sandy McNabb Provincial Park (Turner Valley)
Banff/Canmore
- Kananaskis Village (non-IOF standard map)
- Canmore Nordic Centre
- Canmore Town Site
- The Banff Centre
Exshaw
- Yamnuska
- Rafter Six Ranch
- Bow Valley Provincial Park
- Camp YMCA
Calgary
- Fish Creek Provincial Park
We start off the day with some brief map and compass training … just enough to give the teams confidence so that they can set out on their adventure.
Orienteering courses are of two traditional styles:
Score-O — find the control flags in any order and collect as many points as you can in the time limit allowed.
Point-to-Point — visit the control flags in a set order with the team result based on time to complete the course.
In either case, there is a progression of easy to moderately difficult controls to find. We also loop the course through a central area so that team members can gracefully retire from the event for whatever reason.
Your group will be amazed at what they were able to accomplish and they may be inspired to test their comfort zones further.
